I do not know of one person who doesn’t love a mountaintop experience, and this would also hold true for those who experienced them in both the Old and New Testaments.  These are times when we all enjoy a special spiritual intimacy with the Lord and are able to see things more clearly from His perspective. 

But did you know that it is never God’s will for us to remain on the mountaintop?  You see, the real test of our spiritual life is to have the power to descend down into the valley!  So, if we have the desire  to rise only, then something is wrong.  Yes, it is a wonderful thing to be on the mountain with God, but the real purpose of those rare moments of inspiration is to become empowered so that afterwards we may go down to those who are far from God in order to lift them up.  We are built for life in the valley, for the ordinary interactions and responsibilities of life, and that is where we prove our mettle.

Spiritual selfishness always wants repeated moments on the mountain, but those times of exaltation are exceptional.  The fact of the matter is that we are to live in the valley for the glory of God, and that is where our faithfulness is revealed, and our character can be properly developed.
