HEADS TOGETHER…IN THE HOME

Posted by Dr. Bill Blanchard on

In one of his books about communication in marriage, H. Norman Wright tells the story of a Wyoming sheepherder who had long hours out on the range to observe wildlife.

During the winter, he watched bands of wild horses protect themselves from roving wolf packs by forming an inner circle with their heads together and their hind legs out. In such a configuration, they would kick out at the wolves, wounding or driving them away.

The sheepherder also saw the wolves attack a band of wild jackasses. They also formed a circle, but they put their back ends together and their heads out, and these jackasses ended up kicking one another! Consequently, some were killed by the wolves, weakened by the blows they suffered from each other.

Sometimes I have to wonder if we are as foolish as jackasses in our homes. We all are attacked from without—accidents, corruption, economic troubles, deceitful enemies, overwhelming demands by employers, a family crisis, sickness, etc. And sometimes, instead of protecting one another by attacking the troubles, we blame and attack one another! Instead of edifying one another with our words (please read Ephesians 4:29), we destroy one another’s sense of worth and our covenant to stand together, while the wolves are attacking!

So when you see “wolves” descending upon your home and marriage, put your heads together and your heels out. In the name of our Lord Jesus, keep focused together on how to handle and defeat the problems instead of one another.

Devotedly your pastor,

Bill Blanchard
