This year, May 28th is set aside as “Memorial Day” in our country.  Although many often see this day as little more than the first day of the summer vacation season, it has its roots in the time of national mourning following the American Civil War.  It was first known as “Decoration Day,” and was instituted in 1868 to honor the war dead by decorating their graves and to renew a pledge to an undivided republic. And even today, but usually only in small towns and rural communities, you will still hear this phrase “Decoration Day.” 

Later, after World War I, this day of remembrance evolved into “Memorial Day” to commemorate a time when Americans honor their dead, both military and civilian, whether long ago or recently deceased.  This is why many wish to visit cemeteries, attend military ceremonies, decorate graves, and conduct special services to pass along the stories and traditions that keep alive the memories of those whom we have lost.

Then, in 1971, Congress officially declared “Memorial Day” a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Monday in May, while “Veteran’s Day,” a day set aside to honor all veterans (both living and dead), was to be celebrated each year on November 11^th. 

May we never take for granted the freedoms we enjoy, nor the great cost paid to achieve them.  More importantly, may we remember that our most significant freedom was purchased at the greatest price of all.  As a firm promise of that freedom, the grave of our Lord Jesus Christ stands empty to this day.  With this in mind, I would like to wish you a safe and enjoyable “Memorial Day” holiday with your family and friends.
