OUR NATIONAL MOTTO

Posted by Dr. Bill Blanchard on

In our increasingly secularized world, as you know, we are now living in a post-Christian culture.  In terms of a biblical worldview, all of our institutions have been lost.  But at this time of the year when we celebrate our national independence, may I remind you that it has not always been that way?  Here are just a few historical tidbits to consider:

  • The idea of America as a Christian nation has often been scoffed at by modern academicians, but past American leaders have acknowledged a different understanding. In fact, the United States Supreme Court (1892) once issued a unanimous ruling declaring that America is a Christian nation, and hundreds of courts have acknowledged the same.
  • In 1892, Justice David Brewer, the son of missionaries to Turkey and a participant in the previously mentioned Supreme Court ruling said: “We constantly speak of this republic as a Christian nation, in fact, as the leading Christian nation of the world.”
  • There are several reasons that America has long been seen as an “exceptional nation,” but those reasons are always tied to the Christian beliefs and moral principles of our founding fathers.
  • When George Washington left the presidency, in his farewell address he said: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, [the Christian] religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness—these props of the duties of man and citizens.”
  • On July 30, 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower signed legislation establishing “In God We Trust” as our national motto.

As religious rights of conscience continue to be attacked, this is a great time to remember our national motto and renew our efforts to defend our religious rights.  Let me remind you that our government was established to protect property of every sort, and our Christian conscience is the most sacred of all property.

Devotedly your pastor,

Bill Blanchard
