THE GIFT OF GODLY LEADERSHIP

Posted by Dr. Bill Blanchard on

Too often our churches allow those with proven leadership abilities in the secular world to become leaders in our churches without properly assessing where they are in reference to their spiritual maturity.

As you may know, the bottom line in business is financial profitability, and when gifted but spiritually unready believers are placed into organizational leadership positions in the church, they bring this thinking with them.  That is, they think primarily in terms of giving, attendance, baptismal statistics, and buildings, but not in terms of making fully devoted disciples of Jesus Christ.

While it is true that God may want those people to be leaders some day, they must first of all go through the spiritually maturing process or else they can end up destroying the church they love, sometimes unwittingly.  You see, when our leaders are not mature disciples, they cannot value making mature disciples themselves because they don’t fully understand what one looks like. And, in my estimation, to a great degree, this leadership problem is where we are right now in many of our churches in this country.

How grateful I am that our leaders at Northway have a hunger for the Lord and His Word, plus a love for other people and a cooperative, teachable spirit.  And may we do our best to maintain this pattern in the days ahead so that the Lord is glorified in us as we find our ultimate satisfaction in Him.

Devotedly your pastor,

Bill Blanchard
